HEATHER O’LEARY - NEEDLE FELTING ARTIST

I LOVE FLAT EARTHY COLOURS, TONES AND SUBJECT MATTER, AND MY PRODUCTS TEND TO REFLECT AN ENTHUSIASM FOR THE LAND AND ALL THAT IT AFFORDS US.

About:

I am entirely devoted to the art of needle felting and I design and make sculpted pieces and craft kits inspired by nature and the ever-changing seasons. Having experimented with a wide variety of materials hitherto, I now (almost exclusively) elect to use only native British Breeds in both my work and my kits. We have a rich and abundant heritage of natural undyed sheep breeds/fleeces in the UK whose diverse textures and naturally occurring hues are eminently more suitable to sculptural needle felting than the more commonly used and often garishly and chemically dyed Merino Tops.

I am fortunate to live in the rural village of Trefriw in North Wales, which has historic links with the Welsh woollen industry and which still produces stunning woven items in the local mill. From my workshop high up in the Conwy Valley, I have ample inspiration from the spectacular views and teeming bird life resident in my beloved herb garden.

I have begun experimenting with a variety of homemade/homegrown natural plant dyes for fabric and wool and this has started to feed its way into my work. I love flat earthy colours, tones, and subject matter, and my products tend to reflect this enthusiasm for the land and all that it affords us.
